I agree that we should choose to do what we are good at and what we enjoy to truly be happy. I also want to be a professor and share my love of literature and language with future students. I suppose I could find something else that I do well, but there's no other profession that I'd enjoy quite as much.
I agree with you 100%. It is important to do what you not only enjoy, but what you are good at, and sometimes it changes. I know at least for my brother, he used to love programming and would spend countless hours learning different computer programs and languages. Then out of the blue he realized that what he was actually best at was something more along the lines of being a religion professor. While he still loves computers, he realizes that he can do more as a professor and so has chosen to love that field as well.
It's sad that as such we feel like we always have to defend ourselves when we get asked the "what's your major?" question. Especially when I don't particulary want to get higher education beyond a BS, nor get a teaching certificate. That equals confusion when I tell most people that...
But there are so many other fields and areas that we can excel in because of our passion for literature and because of our understanding of humanity and communication, just like Dean Sprenger is trying to advertise.
